Changing the focus

PhysioDriver, is helping golfers improve their game. Their equipment focuses on unleashing the golfers physical potential and their mantra of “The most important piece of golfing equipment is the human body” seeming to makes sense to consumers.

PhysioDriver focuses on maximizing the physical potential of the human body to improve your golf game. The average golfer focuses exclusively on innovations in golf equipment in an effort to improve overall playing performance. This focus, however, overlooks the physical improvement potential of the golfer.

A multitude of interacting factors determine success or failure in golf. One of these factors is flexibility. Flexibility in the shoulders, hips and spine is vital for an optimum golfswing. Thus golfers should warm-up properly before playing, as well as engage in regular stretching exercises. “We studied the way in which golfers warm up prior to teeing up and saw a considerable improvement potential in this area” says the company’s CEO Jan Bakke. The average golfer often comes directly to the golf course after a day of inactivity and is therefore not prepared for the extreme rotational movement associated with golf.

Traditional warm-up
According to Bakke, traditional warm-up sequences before teeing off consist of rotating from side to side with the arms resting on the club behind the back or shoulders, swinging with two clubs or simply warming up with a wedge. These warm up sequences are ineffective in that they do not provide effective targeted muscle stretching and joint mobilization.

The proper coiling and uncoiling motion in a fundamental swing requires excellent mobility and the swing rotation puts tremendous stress on the spine. The downswing takes only between 0.2 to 0.25 seconds at a swing speed ranging from 65 to 130 mph. This activity requires the brain, joints and muscles to effectively work together as unified components contributing to a fluid unified movement. It is therefore, critical to mobilize spinal joints, and stretch rotator muscles before teeing up.

“Think of the human body as an efficient machine,” says Bakke. Each part of it depends upon the other parts; if one part is functioning incorrectly the other part will be affected. But working together they deliver the same effective results time after time. This is the objective. Build the most efficient machine you can. You’ll be surprised how much more enjoyable the game will be if you do!”

Physiodriver
The PhysioDriver Patented targeted mobilizing system focuses on maximizing muscle and joint mobility and thereby improve golf swing rotation and prevent golf related injuries.

Beate Løkken, MSc in Sports Physical Therapy has the following to say about PhysioDriver.

The golf swing subjects the players spine, hips and shoulders to extreme rotational movement. If the muscles and joints are not prepared for this movement, it may result in injury (torn muscles) and a decreased range of motion. That is why warming up is so crucial: it will prepare the muscles and joints for the extreme rotation that will occur, which gives two substantial advantages: The chances for debilitating injury decreases and rotational movement will increase. Using PhysioDriver 3-5 minutes prior to playing golf, is sufficient to stretch vulnerable rotator muscles and mobilize joints. PhysioDriver in many ways works as your personal Physical Therapist out on the pitch.

Design

The PhysioDriver PSM is easily adjustable and folds neatly to fit in your golf bag and the mobilizing pad is uniquely designed to follow the curvature of the spine. The back support consists of a form fitting material thus applying optimal force to the joints. It is designed to position the chest muscle (pectoralis major) in mid position to apply maximum mobilizing force.

Company History

The company was incorporated in Norway January 2005 after more than 4 years of development by a team Physical therapists and industrial designers in Europe and USA.
